We all want something from God… and that’s a good thing. I mean Christ would not have come so that we can have life and have it more abundantly (John 10:10) if He did not actually want us to want (and have) abundance, right? I’d like to think so. But here’s the problem God Girl, most of us have made the acquisition of stuff our priority which causes us to be all types of ungrateful and selfish. Not only that but we allow our perceived sense of lack to reek havoc in our lives causing anxiety, stress, lack of sleep, stomach ulcers you name it.
Living like this can’t possibly give glory to God. God wants us to be grateful for everything we have no matter if we think it’s a lot or a little. So much so that when we do give thanks, He honors it and causes it to increase.
In John 6: 1-15, Jesus feeds 5,000+ people with 2 fish and 5 loaves. Sounds impossible? Well, it’s totally not, and I’d like to use Jesus’ example to show you how you can give T.H.A.N.K.S. and bring increase into your life. But before we begin, I want to ask, what is your 2 fish 5 loaves? What is that thing you’ve been asking God for? (You may be in need of a lot of things but for now, focus your attention on one of them). Do you need more money? More healthy? More Forgiveness? Whatever it is as you read the remainder of this post I want you to look at it with your “thing” in mind.
Per Jesus’ example, here is how you give thanks.
Tunes into the needs of others (John 6:5) No one had to tell Jesus the people were hungry. Because He was tuned into the needs of those around Him He already knew. I’m sure if you take some time to think about it, there are people within your circle of influence in need of your service in some form or another. I encourage you to be like Jesus, pause for a moment, and tune into their needs.
Have your mind made up to serve (John 6:6) The passage says that Jesus asked Philip what to do just to test Him because He already knew what He was going to do. Those same people God give you to serve I’m certain He also told you how. I encourage you God Girl to be obedient and follow His instruction to the letter.
Acknowledge God and administer all you have to others (John 6:10-11) When the disciples told Jesus how much food they had He could have (like many of us would) told his disciples to shoo way the people so that they could eat. But instead, He took what they had, gave thanks to God, and had it administered to the people He was purposed to serve. How many times have you had just a little and kept it to yourself even though you knew God wanted you to give it? What caused you to be so selfish? Did it allow you to see God move mightily on your behalf? Or where you stuck with just the little you started with?
Never wastes anything (John 6:12) Jesus was careful not to waste any of the food fragments left over. He also did not waste an opportunity to be of service. He didn’t waste the time He had to become an example of righteous living. Nor did He waste moments to show His disciples and ultimately the world what faith and thanks can do. Let’s follow Jesus’ lead and model our lives after His example. How can you make the most of your time, energy, and resources in order to serve others? In what ways are you not maximizing the opportunities you have and what can you do to change this?
Know for certain overflow is coming and prepare for it (John 6:13) When you give are you certain God will give back to you pressed down, shaken together, and running over (Luke 6:38)? Or do you give reluctantly? Or choose not to give at all out of fear that you won’t have enough for you? Jesus gave out of certainty that God would bring the increase. So much so that He had 12 baskets ready to collect the overflow. Are you preparing for your overflow? What if God answered that prayer you’ve been praying for like forever, what would you do with the blessing? If you’re not ready for it God Girl… It’s time to get ready to receive it or stop praying for it to come ijs.
Shy away from the limelight (John 6:15) So the whole premise of this thing is to show your thankfulness by giving from what you already have with the expectation that God will then bring you the increase you need and have been expecting. But so often we give and we expect thank you’s, recognition, or something in imidate return. But just like Jesus literally fled when He saw the people wanted to knowledge Him, He wants us to do the same. Give for the sake of giving, to glorify God, and to be of service. Not to be recognized by those you help.
